Review: A Call for Discernment by Justin Peters

I have just recently received this DVD seminar in the mail and I sat down and watched it over the last few days. Specifically this seminar deals with the Word of Faith movement (commonly referred to as the Health and Wealth or Prosperity Gospel). It is from this movement that the name-it-and-claim-it principle came from.

The seminar is presented by Justin Peters (who until recently I had never heard of). He is a man who suffers from what he describes as a moderate form of Cerebral Palsy (or CP as her often refers to it). Peters has a Master of Divinity and also a Master of Theology. Both from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. More importantly, he knows the movement well as he used to follow it around while younger in order to try and get healing from his ailment. Major parts of his studies were done on Benny Hinn and all the associated parts of his “ministry”.

The Discernment seminar is described as a “biblical critique of the Word of Faith movement”. He combines, quotes from books, emails, newsletters, internet with audio from radio programs and videos of the preachers speaking at conferences, their own churches, and on television programs. I found it very easy to follow and very well presented. Justin speaks in a calm and quiet manner (which is often greatly contrasted with the ranting and railing of the preachers he is featuring).

You can tell by listening to Justin in the seminar that he loves the Lord and that he loves the Word of God. He is passionate about what the Word says and about opposing the people who twist it and take it out of context to serve themselves. He has great knowledge of the Word and on the Word of Faith movement.

The seminar is split into 4 sessions – 1 introduction and 3 main sessions as will be detailed below.
